Gateway to College Graduation Ceremony on Wednesday Night - We are So Proud of Our Partnership!
The letter below is to my friend and colleague responsible for bringing the Gateway to College to Massachusetts. She lost her life in 2021. When she was at the top of her game, she was unmatched in educational transformation. Pat, know that you are missed.
Dear Ms. Pati Gregson,
I talked about you on Wednesday night. Today, I am moved to share my thoughts on your profound impact and the legacy you have left behind through your work to bring the Gateway to College program to Massachusetts. When I was writing the graduation address, I thought about the day that you and President Asquino announced that Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC) received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and then how proud I was to be able to partner with you and the MWCC team.
It is hard to believe that this took place nearly two decades ago. You recognized the transformative power of the Gateway program – and it is safe to say that thousands of students who would not have graduated from high school have received their diplomas because of your work. Working alongside you on this project was an honor and an opportunity to witness your drive, leadership, and dedication.
On Wednesday, as I gave the commencement address at Quinsigamond Community College, it was apparent how far-reaching the effects of your work have been. Looking at the Gateway to College program graduates, I was reminded of the many lives you have touched, the futures you have helped shape, and the societal impact of your efforts. Their success is a testament to your determination to make a difference in education.
The successful partnership between Uxbridge Public Schools and Quinsigamond Community College underlines the value of collaboration and the importance of accessible education. The program you introduced has become an integral part of our educational system and continues to serve as a valuable bridge to higher education for our students across Massachusetts.
Today, the Gateway to College program exists in six community colleges across Massachusetts, an achievement that signifies your enduring impact. The breadth of this program now enables students from various backgrounds to attain a quality education, empowering them to build a promising future.
Your vision and efforts have indeed left an indelible mark, not just on individual students but on the educational landscape of our state. While your presence is sorely missed, your legacy lives on through the program and the lives of those it has transformed.
As we remember your contributions and strive to continue the work you started, we are reminded of the powerful impact one person can make. Thank you, Ms. Gregson, for your dedication and unwavering belief in the potential of every student. You have truly made a difference.
With sincere respect,
Mike Baldassarre
